List of Major League Baseball pitchers who have thrown an immaculate inning

An immaculate inning occurs in baseball when a pitcher in a half-inning of play throws only nine pitches, each of which is a strike and thus strikes out three consecutive batters.[1][2][3] Immaculate innings are uncommon, rarer than the better known individual gameplay feats of a batter's hitting for the cycle and a pitcher's no hitter.[4] Currently 87 different Major League Baseball pitchers have accomplished this feat for a total of 93 immaculate innings. The first one was pitched by John Clarkson of the Boston Beaneaters on June 4, 1889, in the third inning against the Philadelphia Quakers.[5] The most recent one was pitched by Zac Rosscup of the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 19, 2018, in the ninth inning against the Seattle Mariners. Only five players––Lefty Grove, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, and Max Scherzer––have thrown an immaculate inning more than once in their careers. Koufax is the only pitcher to throw three of them.[6] A record eight immaculate innings were thrown in the 2017 season.[7]

Incidence

Out of the 87 pitchers recorded below, 68 pitched right-handed and 19 left-handed. Five pitchers—Roger Clemens, Bob Gibson, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martínez and Nolan Ryan—are also members of the 3,000 strikeout club.[8] Sloppy Thurston, Wade Miley and Ryan are the only rookies to have attained the milestone.[9][10][11] Ryan is also the only pitcher to throw immaculate innings as a pitcher in both the American League and National League.[12] Danny Jackson is the sole player to pitch an immaculate inning in the World Series.[13]

Of the players eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame who pitched an immaculate inning, twelve have been elected and five were elected on the first ballot.[14][15]
